Clothes come out of the wash still coated in fur? A washing machine spreads loose pet hair through the whole load, and the dryer bakes it into the fabric. These laundry balls roll around the drum during the cycle and collect hair, lint and dust as they go, so less of it ends up on your black jeans.

How it works: Drop a few balls in the machine with your normal load and detergent, then run the cycle as usual. The balls move with the water and the hair clings to them instead of to your clothes. Pull the balls out at the end, pick the collected fuzz off, and they are ready for the next load. There is nothing to replace and nothing to switch on.

Good for: homes with shedding dogs or cats, pet bedding and blankets, fleece and dark clothes that show every hair, and anyone tired of lint rollers.

Not for: a miracle clean on a heavily furred dog blanket — they take a good share of the hair out, but a thick coat's worth will still need a shake outside first.

How many balls do I use per load? The manufacturer does not give a number; a few per load is typical, with more for pet bedding.

Do they work in a front loader? They go in the drum with the clothes, so the machine type does not matter.

Will they damage my clothes? They are designed to tumble with the laundry; if you are washing delicates, use a laundry bag as you normally would.
